JOSEPH C. MONTALTO
Joseph C. Montalto, 93, passed away Friday, July 18, 2008 at Specialty Hospital of Lorain in Amherst from complications arising from injuries received in a traffic accident in June 2008.
Joe was born June 19, 1915 in Lorain to his parents, Fred and Frances (nee: Rosso) Montalto (both deceased). He graduated from Lorain St. Mary’s Academy class of 1933. He attended John Carroll University in Cleveland. He retired from U.S. Steel in 1975. After retirement, Joe and his wife enjoyed trips to Hawaii, Las Vegas, Texas and Oregon.
He was a member of St. Peter Church in Lorain where he served as an usher and “a master of ceremonies”, as an adult server at most of the Masses of Christian Burial. He was a member of the St. Peter’s Holy Name Society and was awarded Holy Name Society Man of the Year in 1995. He was a board member of St. Peter’s Senior Group. He was also a member of the “14th Street Gang” and Fellowship and Management Club of U.S. Steel.
Joe was proud of his Italian heritage, devoted to the Church, which was a vital part of his life. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and caring for his house and garden. He especially treasured spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include, his beloved wife of 69 years, Marie Rose (nee: Perrier) Montalto; loving children and spouses, Fred (Marian) Montalto of Ft. Worth, TX, Frances (Bevan) Smith of Amherst, Mary Jo (Dan) Duffy of Lorain, Robert Montalto of Athens, OH and Michael Montalto of Oakland, CA; six dear grandchildren; ten cherished great grandchildren; two sisters, Grace Rinaldi of Hawthorne, CA and Joan Plumb of Orlando, FL; aunt, Rose Diso of Lorain; uncle, Jack Rosso of Lorain; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Frances; and granddaughter, Mary Frances Smith.
The family will receive friends at Reidy-Scanlan-Giovannazzo Funeral Home, 2150 Broadway, Lorain, (440) 244-1961 on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 from 2-7 PM. St. Peter’s Holy Name Society will conduct rosary services on Tuesday at 4 PM.
There will be prayer service at the funeral home on Wednesday morning at 9:20 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM, Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at St. Peter Church, 3655 Oberlin Ave., Lorain. Interment Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
The family requests memorial donations to be made to St. Peter Church Capital Campaign, 3655 Oberlin Ave., Lorain, OH 44053.
